The Sale of Hametz
With the arrival of the Hebrew month of Nisan on Saturday, April 2, 2022, we are reminded that Passover is on its way. One of our traditional practices in advance of Passover is the sale of hametz. Jewish law calls on us to remove hametz - food prepared from wheat, barley, oats, rye, and spelt - from our homes for the duration of the holiday. In case we leave some hametz in our homes, we "sell" our hametz to someone non-Jewish for the duration of the holiday. Immediately following the completion of Passover, ownership of the hametz reverts to the original owner.
To sell your hametz, complete this form .Responses must be received no later than Wednesday, April 13 at 5 pm.
Sale of hametz is accompanied by donation for Ma'ot Hittim/feeding those who are hungry to enable all to appreciate Passover. Donations to Ma'ot Hittim take place through the sale of hametz form. All collected funds will be divided among local and national organizations providing food for the hungry.
Pet owners - Jewish law includes your pet along with your hametz, enabling it to eat its usual animal food during the holiday. Caring for animals is a mitzvah. This practice enables you to keep your pet fed and well cared for in the manner to which it is accustomed during Passover. Rabbi Gelber will donate some of the funds from Ma'ot Hittim to an organization dedicated to animals.
