This evening we celebrate Purim, a story about what it means to live a moral life, maintain dignity and self worth, and pursue justice. Traditionally, the day leading into Purim is a fast day, reminding us of Esther's call for all the Jews in Shushan, including her servant girls, to fast in preparation for her appearance before the king without having been summoned, knowing full well that this is contrary to the accepted rules of the palace (Megillat Esther, 4:16). She reminds the community what it means to act in solidarity as she
prepares to take bold, courageous action to save her people.
This year, bring a current lens to your fast and act with Ukraine in mind. Fast in solidarity with the people of Ukraine who are suffering and struggling in the midst of war. Give the cost of your morning coffee or lunch to organizations supporting relief in Ukraine, like the Hillel Emergency Relief Fund in Ukraine ( donate here ) and organizations like the JDC , Project Kesher , the UJA and others. Make a gift to Westside Campaign Against Hunger to support those experiencing food insecurity at this time.
Take part in the offerings for observing Purim this year, from Hadar's learning series today about fasting, to our Congregation Habonim Megillah readings , and our action for those in need through Repair the World and Met Council, tomorrow at 4:30 pm at the Habonim building ( register here ).
This year, let us commit to creating a world of justice and freedom that honors safety and freedom for all of Gd's creatures.
