Tradition reminds us that the lights of the Hanukkah Menorah are used for one purpose, to publicize the miracle. Which miracle exactly is open to interpretation. Some say it is the oil that lasted eight days when there was only enough for one night. Some say it was the strength to even light the flame in dark times. Some say it is that we still find miracles every day (remember the varient that suggests we pray u'vazman hazeh in the second blessing over the Hanukkiah) and not just in remembering times of 'yore. Whatever our interpretation, the ability to let the lights shine and just witness their presence without using those lights to attend to other obligations is a miracle in itself.
As we begin this new month of Tevet, let us make space to stop and notice the light that surrounds us. Tonight, be intentional about witnessing the awesome power of eight candles burning bright. Remind yourself of the spark that burns within and lights up another. Appreciate the ability to make light shine in the world. Take 30 minutes to breathe and celebrate another Hanukkah, another opportunity to shine and bring holiness to the world. And then, go out and make miracles happen.
If you're looking for something to do from home once your candles have burned out, join Latin Grammy Award-winning musician Mister G and Jewish music-makers and global collaborators for a family-friendly Hanukkah concert, filled with ruach/spirit.
