Vav - Sixth Grade

Our Vav students will explore the range of Jewish experiences through the study of Jewish texts, and entering into the ongoing conversation that takes place within these texts. Vav students will encounter the Biblical text in a new and challenging way, with analytical text study using the inquiry method (What does this text say? What does this text mean? What does this text mean to me?). We will also use role-playing games, activities and projects designed to invite young people to engage in Jewish text. As the Torah forms the foundation for mitzvot, values and tradition, our students will examine the following questions as they engage in Torah study: How is the Torah a part of our lives as Jews? How do the texts from the Torah connect to who we are and how we live? There will be a strong focus on Jewish values and how to live a life that reflects these values.

Vav students will:

  • Immerse themselves in the experience of in-depth Torah study and practice the art of understanding and creating midrash.
  • Continue their study of the liturgy and participate in different forms of tefillah, including Shabbat services, Junior Congregation and weekly services designed and led by members of the class.
  • Explore the holidays through the study of Torah texts specifically tied to each celebration: for instance, learning the mitzvot in the Torah regarding the building of a sukkah and observance of the festival of Sukkot.
  • Advance their knowledge of Hebrew by integrating the study of Biblical and prayer texts.
  • Devote time to examining the elements of Shabbat services that surround the reading of Torah, from the blessings before and after the Torah and Haftarah to the liturgical texts of the Torah service, all which highlight the importance of text in the lives of the Jewish people.

Our goal in our Vav class is to continue our students’ journey toward Jewish adulthood through stimulating study designed to make the most of their creativity and growing analytical capabilities. We hope to enhance this study by further exploration of Hebrew as well as active participation in Shabbat experiences.
