Hay - Fifth Grade

Hei students will spend their school year engaged in the study of prayer on a variety of levels. Students will struggle with the meaning of prayer and the eternal question, “Why pray?” as well as examining these essential questions: What is prayer? How do people pray? What is Jewish prayer? Why do Jews pray?

Hay students will:

  • Increase their facility with Hebrew, while gaining a basic fluency with the structure and meaning of the Hebrew language through prayer and the siddur. Students will also gain a familiarity of the Amidah. The study of Hebrew will encompass liturgical Hebrew and biblical Hebrew, and will be based on commonly used words and language structures found in our siddur and Bible.
  • Explore the values found in our liturgical texts, and connect particular mitzvot to prayers while discovering the purpose of Jewish prayer and the use of prayer as medium for a conversation with God.
  • Study the historical contexts in which these prayers were written and added to the formal liturgy, and look at the evolution of Jewish prayer through historical lenses.
  • Add depth to holiday celebrations by exploring the Biblical foundations and sources for each holiday and discovering the layers of meaning assigned to these holidays and their attendant rituals.
  • Explore the siddur as primary source of recorded prayer texts, and learn not only about the order of the service as it formally appears in the siddur but about the wide variety of siddurim and the reasons behind their variations.

Our goal in our Hay class is to deepen a students’ individual connection to prayer as a vehicle for conversation with God and interaction with our community, and to facilitate a student’s individual acquisition of the skills necessary to actively participate in Jewish prayer.
