Gimel - Third Grade
Gimel students will encounter Jewish values and mitzvot on a variety of levels and in different forms throughout the year. These questions will be posed for examination and discussion: What do Jews believe? What is important to us? What are mitzvot? What does it mean to be commanded?
Gimel students will:
- Examine a different value each week, through stories and music, and pamphlets designed to be taken home and shared with families. Games, role-playing and value clarification exercises will add personal dimensions to the introduction of Jewish values and ethics, and will help students learn how to include these values in their lives.
- Celebrate Jewish holidays with an emphasis on the values that each holiday expresses, in addition to the customs and rituals of each celebration: for instance, ideas of slavery and freedom for Passover.
- Continue the study and practice of Hebrew, learning words that connect to the study of prayer and mitzvot, and continually enhancing reading skills.
- Focus on a few prayers designed to enhance the ability of every student not only to participate in services but also to understand some of the central values of Judaism. These young people will experience the excitement of Jewish prayer by experimenting with the meaning of prayer through spoken and expressed language, art and music, and the creation of personal ritual objects for their home.
- Enjoy a selection of Jewish children’s literature that will expose students to the tradition of storytelling and to the wide variety of meaningful messages and mitzvot that can be studied and discovered through literature.
Our goal in our Gimel class is to expose students to the system of values we call mitzvot, and to engage in an ongoing conversation about our Jewish experience through the lens of Jewish values, enhancing our study of narrative, calendar and Hebrew. Aenne Hahn Religious School
