Bet - Second Grade

The people, places and symbols of our Jewish heritage will be the center of Bet students’ studies this year as they begin to answer these questions: Who are the main characters of the Jewish story? What are the symbols and equipment that we use to celebrate Jewish holidays and to live Jewish lives? What are some of the ways we act, behave and celebrate as Jews?

Bet students will:

  • Begin their study of Bible by learning about the matriarchs and patriarchs, and the narratives in which their stories are found.
  • Encounter the symbols of the Jewish tradition and the rituals in which they are used. From the talit and kippah to the Torah scroll and ark to the symbols on the Seder plate, students will explore the meaning of symbols and how Jews have used them throughout time. Touching and using these symbols will enable these young people to experience the richness of Judaism through their senses, and students will create their own ritual objects to use at home through a series of art programs.
  • Discover the blessing as a form of prayer, through blessings for food and for Shabbat. This introduction to Jewish prayer will also include a study of short prayers in the Shabbat service that our students can recite and sing when they come to our Shabbat morning Mini-Minyan and services at Congregation Habonim.
  • Continue their exploration of the Hebrew language by beginning to read. The study of Hebrew will take an exciting new turn as Bet students will begin to take the letters and sounds they have learned in earlier grades and transform them into words, discovering the richness of the Hebrew language and learning a set of vocabulary which will enable them to speak fluently about their Jewish experiences.

Our goal in our Bet class is to discover the individuals, narratives, places and vocabulary which are the foundation of the story of the Jewish people, and to actively engage in the rituals and use the objects which allow us to enhance our celebration of holidays and traditions.
